How to Download a GEDCOM File from Ancestry

If your family tree is stored on Ancestry, you can download a copy of your tree as a GEDCOM (.ged) file.

  1. Sign in to Ancestry and open the family tree you want to use.
  2. From your tree, select Tree Settings from the tree menu.
  3. On the Tree Info page, find Manage your tree.
  4. Select Export tree.
  5. Ancestry will create the GEDCOM file. When it is ready, select Download your GEDCOM file.
  6. Save the .ged file to your computer.
  7. When ordering your heirloom tree from Branch & Vow, you will be prompted to upload the file.

Please note: A GEDCOM contains the family-tree information we need, such as names, relationships and dates. You do not need to send photographs, documents, or other Ancestry media.

Need two family trees?

If the Husband's and Wife's family histories are stored in separate Ancestry trees, repeat these steps for each tree and upload both GEDCOM files.

Only have GEDCOM for one of the parties?

No problem! When prompted, you can upload one GEDCOM and manually enter the information for the other spouse.
